What the Words Say

The one who roasted round peas must persevere.

What It Means

The honorable thing, if you have started a difficult and reprehensible endeavour, is to proceed courageously and see it through despite any embarrassing criticism.

Cultural Context

During this season, ground peas are normally aplenty together with other farm produce such as cow beans (nyemba), pumpkins (manhanga), groundnuts (nzungu), etc. While the normal process of cooking ground peas is boiling them, a daring person may consider frying or roasting them. This would be quite daring since ground peas harden when fried, making them very difficult to eat let alone digest. Hence anyone who fries ground peas will be criticized such that their only redemption is to succeed in it. Only then can they shame the critics. In this way, our elders were noting that once one is determined to do something they must go all the way regardless of the criticisms and humiliations they will face.

How It's Used

The proverb is a warning to a person beginning or engaging in a difficult or insurmountable task that they must be valiant and complete the task regardless of the criticism they will face. It is used to warn them they will not succeed unless they go the extra mile and complete the task and face all its related consequences.
