Cultural Context
Sorcery and witchcraft are themes that resonate in many african cultures. As such if a village was considered to have a witch, many misfortunes including deaths, illnesses and evil deeds would be blamed on some form of witchcraft or sorcery. Those suspected of such deeds were often ostracized or in serious cases killed. But once one got the label of a witch, most would not associate with them and fear to bury that person at their death due to the many practices at burials including the sharing of the deceased's estate as no one would want to touch any perceived objects trade. Further more there was a fear too that whatever possessed that person to commit witchcraft or sorcery could then be transferred to the person burying the witch. Hence in order for the witch to live normally with others and to secure a proper burial they would not practice witchcraft in their immediate vicinity.
How It's Used
Whenever people stay close together bad and good habits are exposed to those in their vicinity. However if one is aware of some bad traits they possess they must not do those bad things to or in the knowledge of their neighbours, relatives or people within their vicinity. Those people may remember when you are in your hour of need and may decline to assist in matters that only those who are close to you may assist. It is for this purpose that this proverb is utilized to encourage people to keep their worst habits and behaviors as far away from their neighbours and relatives. The proverb teaches us to good deeds to those we are in constant contact with including the workplace and usual gatherings.
